Every year since 1992, the country has made ENERGY the focus of the month of October. From energy awareness to energy action and now to clean energy action, the name of the month may slightly change but the goal stays the same. This annual tradition is a time for individuals, businesses, and communities to reflect on their energy consumption and take steps towards a more sustainable future.

What is Energy Action Month?

Energy Action Month serves as a reminder of the importance of electricity. Electricity is not just a convenience; it is a cornerstone of our society that touches every aspect of human life. It supports health, education, and economic development. Because electricity costs continue to rise, the need for education around how to lower our costs and switch to cleaner energy sources becomes increasingly more important.

In Montgomery County, we have a new and improved website, Montgomery Energy Connection, that links residents to energy information s o that they can take control over their energy usage and ultimately spend less each month on this vital resource. This one stop shop for all things energy will answer any and all questions you have to help you lower your energy bills – if you can’t find something on this website, please let us know by emailing energy@montgomerycountymd.gov and we would be happy to help answer your questions.

Along with our updated website, we also have a newsletter that comes out every month – called Montgomery Power Line, it will keep you updated on stories from the community, tips and tricks to help lower your utility bills, information on funding opportunities, and much more. You can find our previous newsletters on the website and you can subscribe to the newsletter using the GovDelivery sign up form.

Overall, there are four areas that we want to make sure that you consider this Energy Action Month:

CONSERVATION

Energy conservation involves making choices and taking actions to reduce energy use. Simple practices like switching off lights when exiting a room, unplugging devices that are not in use, and opting to walk instead of drive are all effective ways to conserve energy.

How does the county promote energy conservation?

Whether you live in an apartment, condo, townhouse, or single-family home, the County encourages residents to schedule a home energy assessment through the EmPOWER Maryland Program.

EFFICIENCY

Energy efficiency means using less energy to do the same job. It helps save electricity, water, and other resources. For example, switching to energy-saving light bulbs, buying ENERGY STAR appliances, or installing smart thermostats can make a big difference.

How does the county promote energy efficiency?

Since lighting accounts for around 12% of an average home’s electricity use, residents can save about $225 in energy costs per year by switching to LEDs.

  • The County hosts Lightbulb Exchanges throughout the county – just look for the 💡on the calendar to find out where we will be next.
  • Project Porchlight is an initiative making its way through Montgomery County. Because the porch is often the entryway into the home, we decided to use this as the first point of contact to reach residents to talk about using less energy. Trained Energy Ambassadors walk through the neighborhood and swap out incandescent and compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs for LEDs. If you would like to bring this program to your community, organization, or HOA – email energy@montgomerycountymd.gov and we will schedule something for you!

ELECTRIFICATION

Electrifying everything refers to replacing our fossil-fuel economy with wind, solar, hydro, electric vehicles, heat pumps, and a masterfully designed electric grid that allows a two-way transfer of energy.

How does the county promote electrification?
  • Montgomery County has launched Electrify MC,” a pilot program to help residents make the switch from fossil fuels like oil, gas and propane to cleaner electric alternatives. Thorough this program, residents have a turnkey solution for removing fossil fuels from their homes and going electric using the County’s vetted contractor. For more information on how you can participate in the Electrify MC program, please visit our website or if you have any questions, simply contact the HELP DESK by phone at 301-830-5767 or email us at electrifymc@elysianenergy.com.
  • Electric Vehicles are the future of transportation, providing drivers with an emissions-free form of transportation and the ability to charge at home or a public-charging station, instead of worrying about fluctuating prices at the gas pump. Find savings from local Electrified Dealers on the EV Purchasing Co-op Dealership Incentive Page. Each month, dealerships update the deals and special offers they have available.
  • If you want to use a leaf blower or lawn mower, we hope that you make the switch to electric! Beyond the loud noises they generate; did you know that using a gas-powered leaf blower for an hour emits as much carbon monoxide as a car engine idling more than eight hours?

RENEWABLE ENERGY

Renewable energy, derived from natural resources like sunlight, wind, and water, offers a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. By harnessing these infinite sources, we can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, helping the County reach our climate goals to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80% by 2027 and 100% by 2035. Additionally, renewable energy promotes energy independence, reduces pollution, and creates numerous job opportunities in emerging green industries. As technology advances, the efficiency and affordability of renewable energy systems continue to improve, making it an increasingly viable solution for a cleaner, healthier planet.

As we observe Energy Action Month this October, let’s commit to taking meaningful steps towards a cleaner, more sustainable future. Whether you’re an individual looking to reduce your carbon footprint, a business aiming to improve energy efficiency, or a community leader advocating for renewable energy, your actions can make a difference. By working together, we can ensure that the legacy of Energy Action Month continues to inspire positive change for years to come.

So, how will you take action this Energy Action Month? The answer to that question could be the first step towards a brighter, more sustainable future for all.
